Schloss Johannisburg was erected as a residence for the Prince-Bishops of Mainz in the 17th century. The mystical palace took nearly 10 years to complete and was designed by Georg Ridinger in the Renaissance style.
Schloss Johannisburg was a regional hub of power and culture for centuries. It served as a home for the Prince-Bishops of Mainz until the church’s secularisation in the early nineteenth century, when it transferred into the hands of the Bavarian state.
In the years thereafter, the castle has been utilised for various functions, including jail, barracks, and even a hotel.
But, it was nearly destroyed in the closing days of World War II due to heavy American artillery firing. However, rebuilding commenced again in 1951 and was finished after 20 years.
