Schloss Sigmaringen was originally built in the 1000s. It was first mentioned in 1077 for the successful siege of Burg Sigmaringen by Rudolf of Rheinfelden against his fight with Henry IV. In 1083, Ludwig and Manegold von Sigmaringen became the castle owner. Ludwig was married to Richinza von Spitzenberg, daughter of Berthold I von Zahringen. They rebuilt the castle by the end of the 11th century, and their family ruled at Sigmaringe until 1170. In 1183, Graf Ludwig von Sigmaringen-Spitzenberg-Helfenstein became the owner of the castle. The family again renovated the castle. In 1290, they sold it to Albrecht and Rudolf von Habsburg.

The castle owners changed several times throughout the centuries, and each made several constructions and renovations. Finally, Karl II, Count of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, bought the castle, and the Hohenzollern family still owns it.

The modern Schloss Sigmaringen appears from the 11th century to the 13th century. It has magnificent exteriors and equally stunning interiors. It was renovated and expanded in the 17th and 19th centuries under the counts of Werdenberg, but it retained its true form. The Castle Gate, the Main Building and the Keep are still considered original constructions. It is one of the largest city palaces in Germany and an impressive example of how a medieval castle can be developed into a princely residence.
