Lowenburg Castle, also known as Lion’s Castle, was built by the Landgrave William IX from Hessen Kassel in the 18th century. The construction of the castle started in 1793 and was completed in 1801. Initially planned as a tower with a guest house, it was built as a complete fortress grouped around the courtyard. The entire work was handled by the royal court building inspector, Heinich Christoph Jussow, who went to England to study romantic English ruins. The castle was severely damaged during several attacks.

Reconstruction took place in the castle in the post-war years; however, it still needs to be completed. Currently, the keep of castle is being reconstructed. During your visit, you can explore its interiors in the guided tours that start every hour. This castle houses weapons and armour from the 16th and 17th centuries.
