The History of Rose Castle

Rose Castle is a stunning 16,244 square feet (1,509.1 m2fortified house. It is situated in Cumbria, England, on a lovely site that was home to the Bishops of Carlisle from 1230 to 2009. It is situated within the parish of Dalston, 1.5 miles, or 2.4km, from Dalston itself which is only four miles southwest of Carlisle.

The history of Rose Castle

Rose Castle can mainly be attributed to the architects Anthony Salvin and Thomas Rickman who were solely responsible for the alterations which took place in the 19th century. The historical importance of this beautiful castle is shown by its Grade I listing by Historic England.

The early history

The ever so beautiful Rose Castle is the residence of the Bishop of Carlisle. It was built sometime in the 13th century on the site of an earlier castle. The licenses that were needed to crenellate it were granted by the King in 1336 and 1355.

Later on

Rose Castle can mainly be attributed to the architects Anthony Salvin and Thomas Rickman who were solely responsible for the alterations which took place in the 19th century. Then, in September 2015, Rose Castle was listed for sale. Its price was in excess of £2,950,000.

The current day

Rose Castle has since been purchased with the aim to turn it into an international center of reconciliation. Plans are currently being put in place to bring this to life.

Tourism

With Rose Castle now in private ownership, it is closed to the public. However, you can still gain quite a great view of the castle from nearby roads. It is worth the visit, for sure.

Nearby, you can visit Hadrian’s Wall, Windermere, Ullswater, Scafell Pike, Lake District National Park, Derwentwater, and Ambleside.
