Patients with TED often experience a range of ocular manifestations. These include eye protrusion (proptosis), eyelid retraction, and double vision (diplopia). In severe cases, TED can even cause vision loss due to corneal damage or optic nerve compression.

This disease generally presents at a median age of 43, a critical juncture in life. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a family history of TED may increase your susceptibility. 

Tepezza (teprotumumab), a monoclonal antibody, emerged as a promising treatment for TED. In 2020, it became the first drug authorized by the FDA to treat TED.

The Initial Reception of the Drug

Clinical trials conducted by Horizon Therapeutics, Tepezza’s creator, yielded remarkable results. Most patients indicated a substantial enhancement in their well-being. 

Eye bulging, a hallmark symptom of TED, lessened. Pain and sensitivity to light subsided, offering a reprieve from constant discomfort. Most importantly, Tepezza halted the progression of vision loss, preserving precious sight for many.

However, according to TorHoerman Law, the drug’s journey has not been without controversy. Several patients experiencing serious hearing issues following treatment have initiated legal action.

Tepezza: A Case of Magic Gone Wrong?

While Tepezza has demonstrated significant efficacy in clinical trials, reducing proptosis and improving the quality of life for TED patients, it is not without potential side effects. 

Clinical studies reported a concerning frequency of severe side effects. Debilitating muscle spasms can significantly impact your mobility. Moreover, persistent nausea can disrupt daily life. 

Other prevalent concerns include diarrhea, increased blood sugar levels, and hair loss. 

However, of particular concern is the risk of hearing loss, which has been reported in some patients treated with Tepezza. Sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear pain have been documented; with some cases being irreversible. 

A February 2022 study found a troublingly high rate (81.5%) of hearing problems in patients who received the treatment.

The exact mechanism by which Tepezza may cause hearing loss is not yet fully understood, but it is thought to be related to the drug’s effects on IGF-1R signaling in the inner ear.

Horizon believes Tepezza has a “favorable benefit-risk profile” for thyroid patients. Until now, the severe repercussions have left patients wondering if shortcuts in the rushed clearance process put them in danger.

A study published by the Endocrine Society found that up to 65% of patients reported hearing loss or other related auditory problems after receiving Tepezza treatment.

These patients are fighting back, with lawsuits claiming Horizon knew or at least should have known about these risks. 

The Tepezza lawsuit centers on a lack of communication. The plaintiffs allege that Horizon Therapeutics, the drug’s manufacturer, did not adequately inform either patients or doctors about the potential risks associated with the drug.

However, here is the good news: product liability law forms the battleground for these lawsuits. This legal framework offers a powerful advantage to those who have suffered. Unlike other legal avenues, it does not require them to prove intentional wrongdoing by Horizon. 

The burden shifts, demanding Horizon demonstrate Tepezza’s safety or face accountability for its shortcomings. The potential consequences for Horizon are stark.

The Future of TED Treatment

Patients and healthcare providers are increasingly seeking safer alternatives for the management of thyroid eye disease (TED). There are proven traditional treatment options, such as corticosteroids and orbital radiation. Nevertheless, these processes are not devoid of hazards and constraints.

Emerging therapies, such as rituximab and tocilizumab, offer promising alternatives for TED patients. Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody, targets CD20-positive B cells. 

Several studies have yielded promising outcomes, demonstrating the drug’s effectiveness in reducing inflammation and alleviating ocular symptoms. 

Similarly, tocilizumab, an interleukin-6 receptor antagonist, has demonstrated favorable developments. It helps in managing the inflammatory processes underlying TED.

In addition to pharmacological interventions, lifestyle modifications can play a crucial role. They are important in the management of TED.
Giving up smoking should be a priority. It has been determined that smoking poses a serious risk to the onset and course of the illness.

Stress management techniques may also help to alleviate the psychological burden. These techniques include mindfulness, meditation, and yoga.
