History of Narrow Water Castle Initially, the structure that we see today is replacing a tower house and bawn built at Narrow Water by the Magennis family in the 16th century. Narrow Water Castle is the private home of the Wall family. The castle was significantly damaged during the Irish rebellion of 1641. Therefore, it was sold at a low price to the Hall family in 1670. The Hall family ordered the reconstruction of the castle in 1816. The construction was undertaken by Thomas Duff, a well-known Newry architect. He also designed the Cathedrals in Newry, Armagh, and Dundalk. The replacement of the castle that we see today was an “Elizabethan revival style” mansion named the “Narrow Water Castle” in the early 19th century. The Elizabethan castle was built just alongside the existing house and was completed in 1836. The original 16h century castle wasn’t left to ruin; instead, it was handed over to the State in 1956. The Hall family occupied the current castle as their private residence. The mansion that we see today is of the 19th century and remains in the care of the Hall family. “Old Narrow Water Castle”, by David Crozier, is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 Architecture The castle is set in an idyllic setting overlooking Carlingford Bay and Warrenpoint and has a heavenly ambience.
