Crathes Castle History

Built by Alexander Burnett of Leys in the 16th century, a prominent Scottish noble, this Castle was designed as a four-story tower house with a steeply sloping roof. It was intended to be a fortress as well as a nice family residence, with amenities such as a large hall for entertaining, a chapel for worship, and a private family room for the lord and his family.
The castle was enlarged and modified over the years to match shifting preferences and fashions. In the 18th century, a new Georgian-style wing was added to the castle, and the interiors were renovated with popular furnishings of the day.

A significant location in the castle is the Laird’s Room. It has exquisite wood panelling, a fresco ceiling, and a massive stone fireplace. There is also a display of antique weaponry and armour in the chamber.
Another highlight of the castle is The Great Hall which is a wide, open area with a tall, soaring ceilings and a heavy stone fireplace. 
A library, a chapel, and a nursery are among the smaller rooms and chambers in the Castle.

  • Crathes Castle has also been utilised as a filming backdrop for movies and TV series, notably the 2015 production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”.
  • The ghost of a lady known as the “Green Lady,” assumed to be the ghost of a servant who died in the castle, is claimed to haunt the castle.
  • The National Trust for Scotland presently owns the castle, which is open to the general public for tours and visits.
