The castle was built in the 11th century and has a rich history of over 900 years.

The earliest recorded mention of the castle dates back to 1040 when the Lords of Couches owned it. The castle was originally constructed as a defensive fortress, with thick stone walls and a moat surrounding the main building. Over the years, the castle was expanded and renovated, eventually becoming a luxurious residence for the lords and their families.

The castle underwent a period of decline in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was severely damaged during the French Wars of Religion and was partially demolished to make way for a new castle on the site. The new castle was built in the Renaissance style and featured elaborate gardens and fountains.

In the 19th century, the castle was renovated and restored to its former glory. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can explore the castle’s ancient walls and halls and learn about its rich history.
