Built between 1847 and 1857 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II. of Mecklenburg, the Schweriner Schloss was the court of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg. Georg Adolf Demmler, a world-famous architect, designed most parts of Schweriner Castle.

Around 1843, the castle was heavily renovated and started taking the form we see today. Regrettably, in 1913, a significant fire ravaged approximately 75% of the palace. At the time of the revolution in 1918, the castle was still under reconstruction, and the abdication of the Grand Duke ultimately followed.

In 1948, the state parliament chose Schweriner Castle as their seat. In the process, some rooms were converted into museums showcasing Dutch and Flemish paintings.

Schweriner Castle Architecture

When tasked with designing the castle for the Grand Duke, Georg Adolf faced the challenge of creating a structure that was both modern and reflective of the family’s heritage – a style known as Historicism. As a modern architect, Demmler encountered numerous difficulties in developing a design that met the Grand Duke’s expectations. After searching for inspiration, he finally found a suitable model at River Loire – Castle Chambord. Drawing from its features, Schweriner Castle was born.

In addition to the castle itself, the gardens were an integral part of the overall design. Peter Joseph Lenne was responsible for creating the stunning castle gardens, which include a cave, flights of steps, arcades, and other features. Situated near Lake Schwerin, the gardens are always in full bloom, making them a popular destination for tourists. The combination of the castle and its gardens creates a truly breathtaking experience that is sure to delight anyone who visits.
