Durham Castle History

In 1072, the Normans built the Durham Castle following the motte and bailey design under the order of William the Conqueror. In 1080, the castle was attacked and besieged by rebels from Northumbria. In 1177, the castle was seized by king Henry II of England, but Bishop Hugh de Puiset was able to get it back. In the 12th century, he made major alterations to the castle’s design, which Bishop Thomas Hatfield followed in the 1300s. In the 14th century, a large Great Hall was added to its design by Bishop Antony Bek.
The castle remained the Bishop’s palace until Auckland Castle became their residence in 1832. Later, it was donated to the University of Durham by William Van Mildert. In 1837, Edward Maltby, the next Bishop, completed the castle’s renovations, and the college was finally moved into the castle.
