In 1604, King James I granted Warwick Castle to Sir Fulke Greville. Sir Fulke Greville was a powerful man. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1614 to 1621, later raised as Baron Brooke, and then elected as Commissioner of the Treasury. Sir Greville never had a family of his own. So, he decided to give his servant Ralph Haywood a part of his legacy. Haywood considered the part worthless. Thus, he stabbed his master with a knife in a fury. Even today, people claim to see dark shadows of a man coming from Sir Greville’s portrait. It is believed that the ghost of Sir Greville haunts Watergate Tower, which was his study room once upon a time and now became the ghost tower of Warwick castle.

Moll Bloxham was a milkmaid at Warwick castle. She was caught stealing and got publicly punished. She was tied in the castle courtyard as a punishment, where villagers hit her by throwing things at her. With all the humiliation and anger, she broke free and ran to the top of Beauchamp Tower. There she locked herself inside a room. And after a while, when castle guards broke open the room, they couldn’t see Moll Bloxham, and to their surprise, a black dog was standing in front of them. It was said Moll Bloxham was a witch who cursed the castle by turning into a black dog. The guards tried to catch the dog, but it ran and fell to its death into the river. Even after the dog died, people witnessed the ghostly figure.

It is said castle dungeon is haunted by a malicious spirit of a jailer. He enjoyed brutalizing the prisoners that he used to watch over. He used to scratch and violently hurt the prisoners. The evil ghoul has been seen hiding behind a metal grate and yells at the approaching visitors.

The 16th Earl of Warwick, Richard Neville, was called a kingmaker because of his misdoings for eliminating the present king. In the year 1469, Neville imprisoned Edward IV in the castle. Soon after that, he tried to take over the country, but he had to release King Edward IV due to the protests and political pressure. Shortly in 1471, King Edward IV defeated Neville in the Battle Of Barnet. Edward IV reclaimed his throne, and Neville got killed in the battle.
